Boring is what some would try to call John. It starts all the way back into Act One of Homestuck. The first page with John looking about his room, you have to question if you even want to read this comic, because wow it looks very boring by the look of just page one. But I urge you to keep going, click the next page button.
We are introduced to a normal teenaged boy, John Egbert. He has a variety of interest such as magic , pranking, Nic Cage movies, and even amateur computer programming. It is arguable that out of his three really good internet friends that he has lived a really easy life. He has his Dad after all, and all the time in the world to think about mundane things such as squawking about like an imbecile and taking a fresh steamy crap on his desk! He should be what is every dimension of the word boring still at this point.
That is until you dive a little deeper into his personality!
He likes to think he’s pretty clever and funny. Pulling a prank every now and again, going above and beyond sometimes to up his prankster’s gambit. Absolutely no one is safe from his pranks and absolutely no one will be intentionally harmed by them. John is not that kind of person, he doesn’t want to hurt anyone. He is a self-proclaimed Pranking Prince, and that is just that. He has this dumb tendency to act out his favorite movie scenes at the most inappropriate of times but that is also just John being John. This is nothing terribly strange to him in any way.
John is the kind of guy who gives zero fucks at what people think about him. You could make fun of him. That’s cool, he’s not going to go crying to his daddy about it. He’s got a tough skin, and if you set out to make fun of the things he likes then it really doesn’t matter to him. No skin off of his back. If he seriously feels offended however, he will argue back with no reserve on how offensive he can be. Though he’d rather not lose a friend to a seriously dumb argument, can’t they just fix this over a humorous talk or something. Maybe they can hug and make up after a while.
The good will always outshine the bad in a person to him. He just doesn’t like to see people in a negative light. Everything bad ever committed is forgivable and redeemable to John. Which is what gets him in a lot of trouble in regards to believing anything people say.
While he likes to play pranks of his own, he can be very gullible and believe just about anything someone tells him. Hey bro, just take a sweet nap on that bed there. No troubles. The final boss is out there waiting for him, give him the rocket pack and he’s ready to go. No questions asked. He just does it. He’ll even forgive you if you happen to be the one to tell him to do these things. He’s just that kind of person.
But do not mistake the fact that John also has a huge degree of rude and undesirable traits to him. Like the fact that sometimes he has no tact at all what so ever. For example, when he and Jade are discussing her ears he states that he does like them, but they clearly don’t make her look like some weird furry who go out and have sex on the internet in their imagination. Nope. Jade was clearly appalled by the thought of this! A good example of him just being a flat out douchebag is when he and Jade are on year two of their flight and he learns that Jade and Davesprite have broken up. Even though it was intended to not be as rude as it was; John went as far as basically asking how Jade would work out sexual relations with Davesprite, and how would her future even go with him? He said some pretty blunt things to Jade, and it was apparent that she was trying as much as John would allow her to defend Davesprite.
This leads to the fact that it really isn’t all that hard to piss John off. He gets really riled up over the dumbest things, like why Jade couldn’t make the ship go any faster. He really gets his intense levels of douchebaggery when he gets too angry, and that leads to things like him being spazzy and flailing around or throwing a harsh name at the offending person or thing.
It is these traits that define John, and make him who he is. He isn’t someone who can be explained in such words as “derpy” or “stupid”, there is always a lot more to him than that. It is these things that lead his friends to make him the leader of their Sburb group, and John is modest and denies such a title. Instead he prefers his friends come first, and his leadership to come second in line- making him none other than the friendleader of the Sburb group. The game is what really allows someone to see what potential as a character John really has. It allows you a glimpse into his more serious side, when it is time to fight, it is time to fight and do nothing more than that until all of his friends are safe. It’s the game that enables John to grow as a person even he is going through a lot with loss of his father and having a minor temper tantrum every now and again, it’s normal to be a cranky teenager when you are given a chance to be.
John has essentially been forced into a situation where he is forced to grow up, and he still manages to keep his quick humor and his rude comebacks. Essentially give this kid the power of a god, and mix his personality into it and you have everything that makes John Egbert who he is currently.
Abilities:
John is the "Heir of Breath", and essentially he is a god in canon. He reached that tier in the game by dying on his quest bed. As for any super abilities that come with his title, he can do the "windy thing", where he essentially makes a tornado. He also gained conditional immortality. As long as the death is not justified (as in you are a scoundrel) or a heroic act. He also gained some pretty rad mangrit (upper body strength) from handling hammers, take a look at wrinklefucker, it's a sledge hammer and two irons, just think it's probably pretty darn heavy, and he wielded it with one hand, and the same goes for later in canon when he comes to wield the Warhammer of Zillyhoo.
