Sonata for Two Pianos.

["We're going to have you do a recital with another student on campus, very talented, just as talented as you. He's different but we know you'll work together just fine." Said your private piano teacher. You knew who he was, and what he was all about. You two were practically the most often praised musicians on campus. But you had never spoken with him, or given him the time of day. You were always holed up in your practice room before you went home to perform your songs for Dad, who lived close to campus to make sure you were doing your work. You're sure you're way over your amount of practice hours for the semester- what could one recital hurt?

So you agree. You, John Egbert, are going to perform a recital with another pianist you've never met face to face with until now. A first year student at that, as if you have so much seniority over him.

Your fingers rest easy over the keys, you let your fingers do what they've always done. Glide over the ivories to finish off yet another practice session- Chopin was your composer of choice today. Bach was yesterday, perhaps Beethoven tomorrow if you've been good. Your day isn't done, you have to meet him somewhere. You gather your music and clock your time, your instructor said to wait in the practice hall. Your new duet partner would bring the music for you to play today.

So here you stand.]

[Dave gave another nod before going through the music he had on him.

There was the light shuffling of paper as Dave followed John to the practice room. He tapped the other lightly with the folder with the sheets inside. Dave had heard about John, and honest to god, he was a little nervous. He wasn't sure what to expect.]

[He took the folder, still smiling. He was wondering if perhaps the other was just shy. He hadn't said a word yet, luckily his name was also on this folder- he opened it. Fugue in C Minor, by Mozart. Good choice he supposed. It had it's difficulties, but this was just a sightreading day!

He sat at the piano on the left. Just tinkering with the keys a little. Nothing too amazing just yet.]

Have you looked at it yet? [He waited for the other to sit down now.]

[Dave took a little longer to take a seat. He had to adjust his seat a bit, a little bit closer from the piano than what most people put it at. That's kind of weird.

Once he settled down, he just nodded at John again. Not a lot of talking needed for yes or no questions.]

[longwinded]

[John nods, and decides to take the lower voice for himself. He wants to see how his partner would handle taking the top voice without being asked. There was no real lead piano in a fugue- eventually all four hands would have the melody.

So he taps his foot on the pedal, counts off and begins playing. Dave would hopefully come in when he was was supposed to. The beginning was only a little sloppy, for never seeing this John had the gift of sightreading so he could perhaps keep up with Dave. Who must have been looking at this with his private instructor.]

[Dave started playing once he heard the cue to jump in. At first, it was fine. Dave played just like the sheet music, but the longer they played, the more that John could probably tell that Dave was slowly diverting from the original.

Or it was at least getting obvious because they were slowly going out of sync with each other.]

[John was trying to keep up, what was Dave even doing? It was then he noticed Dave wasn't even looking at the score. He hadn't turned the pages like two whole pages ago. That is not how you play piano.]

Hey. [John stopped. He looked pretty peeved.] To play the music you actually have to turn the page you know, and don't go above tempo. I forgot my metronome this time but I can bring it next time for us.

Wanna try again, maybe start in the B section?

[knightime]

[Dave kind of startles to a stop. He was so into his piano playing that he almost didn't realize John stopped playing at first.

He looked a little puzzled but just nodded in the end. He didn't know what the problem was...? He always played like this, so he didn't know why John looked so upset.]

[longwinded]

[He checked the time, and started in the B section. He notices Dave's puzzled look but decided to dismiss it. He doesn't like it when people veer off the path. He hates it, he's a perfectionist. Everything has to be perfect.


He didn't know this was about to go into trainwreck mode again.]

[It was the same thing as last time. Dave played perfectly fine at first, but he slowly veered off the longer they got into the song.

He just completely disregarded the sheet music in front of him.]

[longwinded]

[John really and honestly tries to keep up with this weird tempo and weird take on the Fugue. But when he looks over he notices Dave disregarding the sheets again.

He slams the keys this time, knowing in the back of his mind that was not the right reaction.]

How can you be so whimsical? This is a serious piece and a serious recital we have to perform. You can't veer off the page like this! Please be prepared at the next practice to really hammer on the technique of this song, because I'm not sure you're even aware of how the Fugue works.

Was your special case that you really can't read sheet music, or that you're just so off the wall? It's also rude not to answer me back!

[Dave jumps a little when John slams on the keys. Holy shit, what's your problem dude?

He looks dumbfounded at first, but his face slowly goes back to a neutral expression. The expression doesn't stay long, changing when John brings up his special case. No one told him? He let's out a sigh before digging his pen out of his pocket. The folder he carried not only had sheet music, but a lot of blank pieces of paper. He held out the paper, writing scrawled in bright red pen.]

[He's really good at being a douche enough to scare people. John is really the type to never come out of a room for hours, and doesn't like people in there with him. He only agreed to this because he had to.

He raises a brow. No way in a hell that was frozen over did he perform a recital like that.]

Your teacher was skippy about letting you perform like that? It's a huge mess of things you shouldn't do while playing classical music.

[Though the first part finally hit him.] Why didn't you write that down before? I would have known not to take it so personally? Did you think I was some magician who could have read your mind?

[You are offending him, John. Why are you such a dick? No one told him you were like the hugest asshole.]

this is usually something people bring up when asking important questions like a duet for a recital

[Maybe it was pity that got Dave the scholarship. Poor boy with no voice can play the piano in a sick wicked way- let's assume he's the best thing on this planet and give him a scholarship.

John worked his ass off to get here.]

Do you have to have such vile language? Scholarships do not mean a thing about your talent, and I see none.

Maybe they expected you to tell me, you're a big boy. Your disability is not something for the other teachers to go around catering to.

[John doesn't even give Dave a chance to write back, he snatches the pen and throws it. What would Dave do now?]

[Wow, John. Way to just assume Dave didn't do his damned hardest to get into this school. He worked hard and he wouldn't be here if they didn't offer that scholarship, you dick.

Dave just sits there. Did John...?

Yeah. John just threw his pen across the room. He had no way to communicate with John now. He was pretty sure the guy didn't know sign language. Most didn't.

What was he supposed to do? Other than just buckle down and deal with the verbal assault that he knew was coming.]

I can't work with someone like you. I can't work with someone who doesn't have the comprehensive ability to stay with the pages. It's utterly disrespectful to the composer. Mozart is literally rolling in his grave right now, doing flips even at how awful that was.

[John just didn't understand how to come out of the box, if he could do that then they would sound great together. But right now it sounded like two totally different pieces- and that just didn't cut it.

He would be talking to his private teacher on finding him a new duet partner. Though it doesn't work like that, divas don't always get what they want.]

If I decide I still want to work with you, I'll contact your teacher, and you had best show up and know how to play your part. I gave you top voice because I thought you had great promise for a first year, you're proving me so wrong right now.

[And then John stomps over to get the red pen, slam it in front of Dave, and storm out.]

[Dave is glued to his seat, completely numbed at what just happened. The pen just rolls and clatters back to the ground as he looks at the door. Shocked.

He finally tears his eyes away from the door and back at the sheet music.

Maybe...Maybe he was playing it wrong the whole time. He got accepted because he had potential to play, but that meant going by the book. He...he could do that. He just needed time.

Dave finally tucks the sheet music and gets to his feet, pocketing his pen. He felt so unsettled right now. John's words cut through him like a knife.]

[For the next few days, John didn't speak to Dave. He didn't even steal glances in the hallway. He just tended not to acknowledge him, or walked right past him with zero eye contact.

It wasn't until their fifth day of not speaking did John start to feel some remorse for what he said. A lot of things he said really didn't need to be said. Truth be told, Dave had a truckload of talent and it was intimidating John. He felt the need to be perfect, and how can someone like Dave be so perfect without living inside the box?

He wanted to go find Dave, he would start at the piano labs where a group of students were talking. He overhears them say Dave had to be sent out of class because he was struggling, the teacher assume he was sick and sent him on his way. But where would he be?]

[Dave didn't go home even though the teacher sent him out for the day. He went to one of the practice rooms to play. Honestly, he would be so embarrassed if anyone came in while he was playing.

He was just completely off his game now. He was trying to play the song perfectly. But he just kept screwing up. His mind and fingers were doing different things. His mind wanted to do something else, but he was trying to stick to what he saw.

He slammed his hand against the keys of the piano before banging his forehead against them. He didn't know how to play anymore. Did he give up what he basically had done for so long and try to force himself into what was considered perfection? What if he failed his classes? He'd lose his scholarship.]

[longwinded]

[John wandered back into the practice hall. What he heard inside the room was an awful slur of something and then a slamming of keys. This was unfortunate. He knocked on the door before opening it. This is what he was going to have to do.

As he thought, it was Dave. He looked upset. John walks in and closes the door.]

Look, I know you probably want me to go burn in some raging fire somewhere. But I didn't come here to verbally abuse you again, that was wrong of me. I didn't have the right to peg your disability, I had no place to say you have no talent, and I can't dictate how you play.

Are you feeling alright?

[knightime]

[Dave's knuckles were white. It was obvious that Dave was fairly uncomfortable around the other right now. He didn't get up and leave though and he seemed to at least be listening to what John had to say. It was hard to tell since Dave stared down at the keys instead of at John and his shades obscured his eyes. But his mouth was set in a thin line.

After John's question he just shrugged. Just a bad day. Well...a few bad days.

He was going to get this down. Than John wouldn't think he was a talentless hack.]

[longwinded]

[John stays by the door. He doesn't want to distress Dave anymore than he already had in the first place. He didn't mean to break Dave down like this. He didn't mean to push him over the edge.]

I'm sorry is what I'm trying to say. I want to work with you. We'll work slow if you're really determined to learn the sheets. You can memorize it and not use the sheets if you don't want to.

You have talent. A lot of talent. [John shrugged, taking back everything he said probably wasn't going to be enough.]

[Dave finally looked at him. He tore a piece of paper off and scribbled something on it. He tucked all hist stuff away as he got up and moved to leave the room. He shoved the small slip of paper into John's hand before heading down the hallway and out of sight.

It was simple.]

tomorrow
2 pm

[longwinded]

[He took the paper, looking at it and hanging his head. They both had a free period then he supposed. So that was that. He would meet Dave at two back in the practice rooms. He hopes this time won't be a trainwreck.

The rest of the day is spent in his classes and going back home, the next morning goes as every other morning had and at exactly two in the afternoon he was waiting for Dave. Waiting on maybe another trainwreck.]

[Dave look tired when he arrived. A little disheveled. He spent the entire night practicing, so he was a bit tired. But at least nothing should go wrong this time.

He knew how to play the song. There would be no reason for any mess ups this time. Right?]
